You often hear about celebrities being arrested/charged/convicted with crimes and there has been much debate over the years regarding if famous people get too light a sentence compared to you or I. (Not me of course, I'm an angel)

Most recent example I can think of is Chris Brown. He was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to do six months of community service for beating up the singer Rihanna. I don't know the extent of the incident nor do I know what the normal punishment is for this kind of crime so I can't comment if this was a light or normal sentence.

Do you think criminals should receive the same punishment as normal people would get, a higher sentence to set an example to the rest of us or get even a lower punishment? And why?

I said same simply because the law is suppose to be impartial. That it is partial, is not the issue. They should get the same sentence as me or any of you would get.

Thirded.

They are people who have committed a crime. And no amount of tears, weeping and wailing or gnashing of teeth should let them get out early...

I agree with all. no special treatment. I think they get away with more sometimes because they can afford good lawyers to reduce sentences or just change the punishment all the way around. most criminals that get the max sentence are the ones that have public defenders that they can't pay very well if at all. Not fair, indeed, but that's what a high price lawyer gets you; just the way the world turns I suppose

You're all boring, you lot! I was hoping someone would say "hit em twice as hard" but noooo, you had to go for the sensible answer.

We were discussing civilian court. Give me Gitmo any day. That's Guantanamo Bay for you n00bs.

OH!! OH!! OH!! speaking of hitting them twice as hard, by all means go see "Inglorious Basterds" starring Brad Pitt. I've seen previews on TV and still don't know if it's been released yet. Me thinks it hasn't since they still run ads for it.

OK I just saw it. Release date here is August 21st. Behold. My cup of tea.

It disgusted me when Paris Hilton got out of prison after just a few days. Other people don't just get to say 'get me out of here, its icky and I am being bullied' they just have to shut up and put up with it. The law is meant to be impartial to background/who the criminal is (rich and poor, common or famous).

There is some argument that they should be treated harsher in some ways as they are role models and if they get off easily perhaps other people may think they can get away with it. It just promotes the wrong image. But where they should be treated harsher is the press (not longer sentences, but more criticism) so that the image isn't of a glorious criminal getting away with it, but shows that crime doesn't pay
