If a Tree Falls in the Forest, and there's none around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
Of course it does!

well once again it depends on your definition of sound and hearing and what is required to have either. Feel better?

of course it makes a sound it's just that fact that as the question states nobody is around to hear it. The tree falls, the wood splinters and the tree crashes into the ground disturbing the leaves and little fuzzy animals, this emitts sound waves which fly off, it's just that nobody is there to hear it.

This can fall under the same category of if I can't see it, it doesn't exist. Which is complete bollocks, my feet are currently hidden under my desk and i can't see them so does this mean that they aren't on this plane of existence any more?

But if your definition of sound requires that a human being must hear it then the answer is a resounding (no pun inteneded) NO. OK it was intended. Laughing

sound requires the presence of sound waves which are created when two things collide or for any other number of reasons with the sound waves created by the falling tree there is sound, just nobody can hear it.

i love these type of topics, being philosophical is fun

I know that but in philosophy there appear to be hair splitting qualifiers out the wazoo to define what most of us take for granted to be self-explanatory. But as you study you learn the need to split hairs and "over" qualify terms and definitions and that it really is not so obvious after all what is truth, good, moral, etc., etc. There in lies the fun playing with the current thread.

if everything has a purpose then what would be the purpose of a sound that no one had the chance to hear?

Alright, I'm going to wade into this thread (I would cross myself, or offer up a prayer for protection, but i'm not religious so i'm just going to have to hold my nose and hope for the best)

Just because no one can hear it, doesn't mean that anything cant hear it.

a cactus would make a gentle, prickly sound, but the vibes would still be there.
