I can so see this thread now degenerating into a 'yeah? - well a Longbow is better because you can kill people at distance, yeah? - well a heavy crossbow is better, it was believed to be the weapon that would end all wars, followed by a well a stiletto is good for slipping between the ribs etc'

Half a mind to add a few extra options to the poll now of a various assortment of medieval weaponry

Actually, my pick handle just has a wrap of galvanised metal around the end, maybe 3/8ths of an inch thick and two inches wide. Just to prevent splintering.

Technially it's a stick, not a weapon, which may be handy one day in a court of law, in that it can't be proved I had intentionally armed myself in advance and so fails the 'In Mens Rea' test, but only just..

I believe that during the Depression, the sign generally read "hawkers and canvassers need not call". But Llap Goch and all that.

@ minty - zweihanders are allright, but there is something so much more satisfying about hitting someone (safely - in living history) with an axe. Or if you want a really kick-ass weapon, use a mace - so violent there is no way of making it safe to use in a re-enactment sense:
