At the weekend, I met Minty's little niece and his sister is expecting more.

Do you have any nieces or nephews?

My brother doesn't have any kids but Paul (my boyfriend) has *counts* 4 nephews and 1 niece with twins on the way. I could always steal them if I needed to!

Do you like being an aunt/uncle?

Yes because you get just the good times and non of the bad times associated with children.

You can't put children away on a shelf, there is no off switch so the equivalent is to hand them back to where they came from Smile

No late nights ( getting up at 3am for whatever reason when you're at work in 5 hours time ), no dirty nappies, no loss of money, no nights/weekends/plans ruined because you have to look after your little ones etc.

There is a type of generic card ( you know, birthday card, Christmas card etc ) which has a black and white picture on the front, and underneath there is a witty caption. One that I got for my birthday once was a picture of a man on the front with a frown on his face as if he was thinking, the caption underneath was :-

No matter how hard he tried, John just couldn't see the benefits of having children over a Lotus Esprit V8

Maybe I just don't have a paternal bone in my body though.

It would be disturbing if I had nieces and nephews. I am the eldest and I'm only 17!

I have two nephews. I never see them though and I'm not much of an elder to them anyway. One is nine, the other is thirteen, and I'm seventeen. There are times where I feel shy speaking to them as if they're my peers and I'm not their Aunt. I don't really like having nephews. The pressure of having to possibly be responsible for them one day fucking sucks when I just want to be a kid like they'll be in a few years.

Surely though, there would be a few other people that'd 'catch them' like a safety net before it was unloaded on you?

Your parents, other 'older' people in your family would care for them as they are better placed to do a better job, before it came down to you Smile ?

If i've understood you correctly that is, if not, please do point out where i've gone wrong Smile

I have one niece that, due to my move to California, I did not see from when she was 8 till she was 23. Was a bit strange missing all that time, but she grew up to be a totally delightful young lady.
