We have had snow for two solid weeks now - never seen anything like this. It is usually only here for 3 days and then it's gone for good.

Often people are excited to see it snow but as it's been here soooo long, it's getting a bit boring.

I'm getting bored of having to dig my car out of the snow everyday and been held up in traffic.

Not having to drive anywhere myself I can still enjoy the snow hehe. I can see why those who drive get annoyed by it - but its not really the snow's fault - if we lived in a country that could deal with it, you could have all the prettiness of the snow without the chaos that it seems to cause here. Countries like Norway (just speaking from personal experience - I am sure there are many others) can deal with the snow - you can have several feet of the stuff and the trams, busses etc still run on time (that's more than we can manage with perfect weather hehe).

So basically, I love snow, I wish we had more, but I also wish that England could deal with it without everyone panicking so that it wouldn't disrupt everything...

Rach - Is it bad that the bad weather in North America makes me feeel better about the UK's reaction to snow? I'm sure they have had it bad but they don't look to be coping any better than us Brits.

Are any of our American posters affected by the bad weather over there? Any interesting stories?

In my experience the northern states of the US are generally well prepared for the snow - when I lived in Michigan there were snow plows everywhere and the main roads were kept pretty clean. However this cannot cope with everything - sometimes if there is a lot more snow than expected or if it arrives particularly quickly, even if the equipment to clear the snow/grit the roads is there it is too late to be able to deal with the snow effectively. Once when I was in Michigan they had to close the airport because of heavy snow (they couldn't clear the runway), so it proves their system isn't unfallible either, just a heck of a lot better than ours!

However, in the states less used to getting heavy amounts of snow, I am sure they are as unprepared as we are. The equipment is expensive to buy and maintain, so its only really worth having a fleet of snow plows if you can guarentee you will need them for 3months every winter.

Your post reminds me of a quote I heard on the news.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell commented that "we're all turning turning into a nation of wussies".

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/27/ed-rendell-eagles-postponed-joke_n_801536.html

http://blogs.abcnews.com/nightlinedailyline/2010/12/were-becoming-a-nation-of-wussies-is-rendell-right.html

Surely when 'the game' gets cancelled that has to mean hard weather right?

As an addition to Rach's post, how do snow plough drivers get to work ?

Helen >> The first year I lived in Ohio snow stayed 6 inches deep or more from October to April. Hmmm, OK March, but there were deep patches the the ground was covered well into April.

@Minty. They live where the plough lives during the peak or until the roads are passable.

OH!! It's still great. W00T!!
