when you do a fresh install of itunes you are asked rather upfrontly do you want apple to collect user info to let them know how devices are used and how to make their products better blah, blah, blah.
how well they abide by your wishes when you say 'no' is anybody's guess.
Also, camera users on the iphone (now ipod4) have known for some time that pix can be sorted by location. So if you go to new york, chicago, miami, LA, tokyo, perth, bangkok, goa, cairo, athens, andora, lyon, london, and hull, you can then sort alllll your beautiful piccies by location.
So, the goa pix are all together and so on. I bet you thought i was going to go through the whole list.
Then there's all the apps that use location services for all the myriad of reasons to locate you.
All that being said it appears that researchers are learning that the file does not actually track the device but the wi-fi hubs and cell towers near it - possibly a test file for an IOS beta that was not removed.
And even if it was not just for testing but intented to be used in one of the recent updates, it still isn't tracking the device per se but the towers and hubs around it.
to what extent we'll ever know the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth there's no where to run. They can all do the same thing.
uh, what were you saying. . . . ? _________________

News reports didn't actually mention that they give you a choice. I guess that makes it different. If you answer 'no' can you still use the technology?
Lol that you mentioned Hull in the list of those amazing cities:) _________________ Helen, the Administratrix of www.area51newmexico.com

Yes you can elect not to send the info and still use the device and iTunes, which is why I wonder if they don't ignore the no and collect it anyway. I'm cynical like that. _________________

They would not be the first to ignore what you said you'd like their program to do. I forget who was responsible for it, but it might of been RealPlayer that sent usage statistics back to Real anyway regardless what you said.
If you really wanted you could find out if any software was making your computer spy on you with what you were doing.
You just need a lot of time and some packet sniffing software, switch off all 'let me phone home' options and see what packets are still being sent.
I forget if it was Steve Gibson who wrote about his discoveries on this but the write up if it still exists it made quite a good read.
Anyway, TFA talks about an iPhone tracking the users location. While proper normal mobile phones have been able to do this for ages ( I even made a thread about it years ago and got 1 response ), it's that this builds up a history perhaps as well?
As for aalpha, while the terminology is correct in that it's not tracking *you* it's tracking the iPhone based on towers, you can perhaps get a 'pretty good read' on location. _________________ I should update my sig. What to put here for $CurrentYear ? |

Apple of course denies they track people but now there's an OS update that gives users more control over the matter.
Right. _________________
