What are your thoughts on this? Good, bad, indifferent?
Maybe I've been listening to Minty (lam.... or whatever your name is now!) too much but this power could easily be abused? They don't need a court order (or whatever the British equavilant is) to access this information.
We already have some mointoring, but this new idea is going further:
"Instead internet service providers have had to keep details of users' web access, email and internet phone calls for 12 months under an EU directive from 2009.
Although the content of the calls themselves is not kept, the sender, recipient, time of communication and geographical location does have to be recorded" _________________ Helen, the Administratrix of www.area51newmexico.com

This isn't new, Bruce Schneier wrote this article way back in 2009 on this topic.

The way the system works at the moment is that this has always been possible, it's just required a warrant. The government and law enforcement agencies want to give themselves the power to do the equivalent of wiretap without things like warrants getting in their way.
When they speak of safeguards will be in place to prevent misuse safeguards already are in place, it's called a warrant.
Unless anyone can suggest why we need these new laws, I don't believe that line. _________________ I should update my sig. What to put here for $CurrentYear ? |
