Do you agree with my classes? |
Yup, I think you're genius for making something so brilliantly simple. |

|
|
I've always said there are music can be classified in four different ways, above genres and any other crap. My four categories are based around how mainstream the music is and are the following:
- Fake
- Mainstream
- Undergound
- Mainstream to Audience
Time to explain.
Fake:
Fake music is generally mainstream music which pretends to be something else, or is pure plastic shit. For example, pop groups. They're not musicians, they're pretty faces and smiles. While they are also mainstream, they are more "fake" than "mainstream".
Mainstream:
The big money bands that pull audiences into genres. Think of Slipknot for metal, Eminem for rap etc. This is true mainstream, imo.
Underground:
This is pretty simple. It's the kind of music that never gets proper recognition. It can also be music without a mainstream sound, so only a limited audience appreciate it. An example of this is Less Than Jake, their first few albums were brass instrument-heavy and generally weren't very melodic, their "newer" sound is mainstream to audience.
Mainstream to Audience:
This is music that doesn't haul people into genres, but once people learn to enjoy a type of music, the bands that get circulated often. For example, Slipknot are a mainstream band, even hardcore rap fans have heard of them. Now a metal head would also know about Stone Sour (Corey's other band) but the same hardcore rap fans would not know who they are. Other bands like this are; Nonpoint, Ill Nino and Trivium. Mainstream to Audience also describes most forms of newer music. For example, Nonpoint's early material was very similar to what it currently is, yet it was underground. In order to gain some radio playtime and become mainstream, the next album they released was heavily melodic, which made it a mainstream sound to knowledged metal heads, but sounded like "the same shit" to disappreciative ass holes.
So, do you agree with that? Disagree completely? Think it needs an extra category/one less category? Or are just beginning to wish for my poll buttons to break?
Oh yeah, if you need any more clarification on anything ask away. It's kinda hard to describe stuff that I've understood for ages from scratch.

I've missed your witty polls! Where have they been hiding?
Very novel and interesting idea Av! Brilliant!
I do agree with you. I listen to alot of music but would be classed as "underground" by the mainstreamers (bands like Delight, Epica, After Forever, Leave's Eyes I could go on for a while now etc) but those bands would probably be considered "mainstream" in certain circles e.g. Sonic Cathedral. I guess it depends on your perspective.
But I've also listened to bands like Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil and Nightwish for ages now and they have suddenly broken through into the mainstream from the Underground. _________________ Helen, the Administratrix of www.area51newmexico.com

You left out "other", so I went for the Yorkshire option. I don't listen much so I don't have an opinion. |

I didn't leave it out, ask Minty
BTW it should be self-explanatory, so how did you not understand? I should be able to clear it up.
@ Helen,
TY When I become someone with a voice that matters in the world remind me that you thought I was a genius.

I think i've just woken the household up with laughing so loud, I read that in a 'breathless, half exhausted' woman style voice, mixed with Kenneth Williams...

Once again I only notice a comment on my fourth time scrolling past it...
Um, no-where. Once I handed over my crown I kinda forgot about making polls. This one wasn't actually going to be funny until I actually started posting the thread!
But there will be more, as we have so many newbies that need some pollmaster brilliance that I must reconquer the forum! Huzzah for AVARiCE Polls!
EDIT:
@Taf,
That's brilliant, I never even noticed that...
@An ANON Voter,
Why would you say no because you don't like stereotypes? Go on, admit it...

@ Bubble
That just meant that I was offering males a "yes" option to click. Or those who don't think I'm a genius.
@ aalpha
From what I understood, nope. This is a completely new system, where have you found a similar one?
