Some of you may know that I am currently living in Reykjavik whilst volunteering at the National Museum of Iceland for 6 weeks. I am having such a great time. The work is interesting - I am looking after the archaeological collections at the museum. Plus it is great to be able to explore at weekends. I thought you might be interested in seeing some of my pictures:

dittos on the jealousy. Right now you are volunteering right? So that means one day you'll get paid to do and be around all this fascinating stuff. <bangs head on table>

I know you couldn't put captions on all the pix but who might this be? Jack Dawson?

@Helen - do it! Iceland is amazing! Such a beautiful country.

@aalpha: That's the dream - that one day, someone will pay me money to work in a museum or stately home or other similar institution and look after historical objects Very Happy Doing all this abroad is just an added bonus. As to the identity of the deceased, she is female but I am not sure anyone knows who specifically she is. So Jane Doe it is...

I am off this weekend to see more of the countryside: volcanoes and a glacial lagoon (read lake with floating icebergs). Plus if I am brave enough I will try an Icelandic delicacy hákarl http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A1karl (see the link for why I have to be brave to try this!).

I wish you luck!

Hákarl is an acquired taste[citation needed] and has a very particular ammonia-rich smell and fishy taste, similar to very strong cheese slathered in ammonia.

As you ponder whether to actually take a bite, re-consider Aristotle's concept of the Golden Mean. In a nutshell, he proposed there is a fine line between courage and foolishness.

But by all means have fun and don't look back. Wink Very Happy

Actually, the fermented shark wasn't as bad as I was fearing. It tasted like a strong white fish (perhaps monkfish) if it had been pickled. It was ok, but I probably wouldn't eat it often.
